Tuesday 3rd November - Of Time and the City (12)
Dir: Terence Davies (UK 2008, 74 mins)

A spectacular return to form by Davies, long-hailed as one of Britain’s greatest filmmakers. This is no simple documentary about Liverpool; it is an entrancing piece of autobiographical cinema that reaches far beyond the city in which it is set, weaving a rich tapestry from archive and contemporary footage, music, voice, literary quotation and wickedly funny observation. “What a lovely film this is, and what a welcome comeback for one of Britain's greatest film-makers.” The Guardian

PLUS The Vanishing Street (1962, 20 mins), about Hessel Street in London's East End. A lyrical documentary of a Jewish community filmed by acclaimed Hungarian director Robert Vas moments before bulldozers started pulling down the shops and houses.

Tuesday 10th November - I Am Happy
UK PREMIERE / 2009 London Latin American Film Festival screening / Q & A with the director after the film
Dir. Soraya Umewaka (Brazil 2008, 66 mins)

The 2009 London Latin American Film Festival comes to SE22 with this special screening of a new film by documentary filmmaker Soraya Umewaka. Far from being just another example of 'poverty porn', this beautiful documentary reveals the vivacious culture of Rio's slum communities in the face of prejudice and deprivation. A positive representation of the decent and hardworking folk of the favelas, and a joyous celebration of the power of human creativity. Programme will include another Latin American short film.

Tuesday 17th November - The Class (Entre Les Murs) (15)
Dir: Laurent Cantet (France 2008, 130 mins)

Armed with the best intentions, François and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough neighbourhood. Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom, where François’ extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods. Cannes Film Festival 2008 - Palme d’Or

Adapted from a short story by Haruki Murakami. Born after the war and given a Western name by his forward-looking but misguided father, Tony struggles to make friends, develops an aptitude for technical illustration and eventually meets a young woman whose passion for fashion mirrors his own fetishistic fascination with the look of things.
Sundance Film Festival 2005 – Grand Jury Prize. “Has about it something approaching perfection.” Philip French, The Observer.
